Job Description

Public Health Nurse (Temporary)
Duration: Approximately Six (6) Months
Health Services – Communicable Diseases
CUPE Local 966- Health Services
The TB Prevention and Health Promotion Team requires a self-directed individual to work within a collaborative team environment to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards for Tuberculosis Prevention and Control.
Team Specific Responsibilities:
  • Investigation and case management of reports of Latent TB Infection (LTBI)
  • Case management of new immigrants requiring medical assessments for TB including facilitation of appointments with physicians and physician consultation for assessment requirements
  • Assessment and interpretation of physician reporting forms, drug orders and lab work and resulting nursing interventions
  • Health promotion activities including health education, advocacy, resource development (fact sheets, physician/client tools, website); group facilitation and presentations of TB information to health care professionals/agencies
  • Physician Outreach activities including attendance at physician events; academic detailing
  • Telephone counseling / in person assessment to clients, health care providers and other health care partners;
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with health professionals and agencies;
  • Program planning and evaluation activities reflecting the use of the E2EPublic Health Practice approach i.e.,
  • Conducting environmental scans, community assessment, literature reviews and critical appraisal, data analysis;
  • TB policy and procedure development;
  • TB clinic duties including administering and reading Tuberculin Skin Tests and HIV point of care testing;
  • TB skin test clinics at schools or work places as needed;
  • Processing TB medications to physician offices or in TB clinic and occasionally the client directly;
  • Developing and maintaining linkages with other health professionals and agencies (e.g. physicians, local hospitals and community health agencies)
  • Assisting the supervisor in program development
General Responsibilities:
  • Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
  • Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients both in person and electronic client communication vehicles
  • Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
  • Identify and analyze how clients’ culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
  • Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
  • Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
  • Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
  • Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved health outcomes
  • Develop, foster and facilitate inter-sectoral partnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
  • Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
  • Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentorship opportunities as appropriate
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
Location: 7120 Hurontario St. Mississauga, ON
Hours of work: 8:30 – 4:30 Monday through Friday with flexing as needed for program requirements
Preference will be given to qualified candidates who are currently in the bargaining unit.
